CHAPTER 29

REFUSING TO ACCEPT what Gavin said, Charlotte repeated his words in disbelief. “They’re penalizing teams with android players?”

“That’s right. We’ll be starting tomorrow’s match with ten fewer minutes than teams without an android.”

“What?” Charlotte’s jaw dropped. “That’s an insane advantage for other teams.”

“It is not insurmountable,” Eli offered, “but it will make completing the challenges more difficult for us, which I suppose is the intention of the rule.”

“You could find other human players to replace us,” Isaac suggested.

“Definitely not,” Charlotte said as Gavin shook his head. “This is bigger than our team. This is about the school letting a handful of students discriminate against others. We can’t let that happen.” She wrapped her scarf around her neck and slipped into her coat.

“Where are you going?” Gavin asked.

“We’re going to see Dr. Vosima.” Charlotte placed her hat resolutely on top of her head.

Luckily, Dr. Vosima was currently holding his office hours, which meant that Charlotte could look up his location in their viewers. While most professors held their office hours in their offices or classrooms, Dr. Vosima was notorious for spending his afternoons in a variety of spots.

“He’s at the gazebo.” Charlotte waited a moment for her friends to gather their things. “Let’s go.”

Lost in thought, they walked in silence and periodically brushed accumulating snow from their coats and hats. Moments later, they approached Dr. Vosima’s location and found that they weren’t the only students with this idea. Three first years descended the steps of the gazebo and walked toward them with dejected expressions.

“Hey,” Charlotte said to the girl with blue hair peeking out from a scarf. “It’s Aries, right?”

The girl brightened a little upon seeing Charlotte and her friends. “Yeah. And Roscoe and Jepsen, who I think you know,” she added, pointing to the boys on either side of her.

“If you’re here to protest the new enigma rule, good luck,” Jepsen said, shielding his eyes from the falling snow. “It doesn’t seem like the faculty want to budge.”

“We’re here to try,” Gavin said. “Strength in numbers, right?”

“That’s right.” Roscoe leaned forward with a grin. “And we might be planning to speak to Dr. Avalapo, but you didn’t hear that from us, given that we might have been explicitly warned against doing so.”

“Dr. Avalapo’s personality does indicate that she would be sympathetic to our cause,” Isaac said, “though as the junior member of the faculty group, she may not have the political capital needed to sway the decision.”

“It’s worth a shot.” Aries smiled as the trio waved goodbye. “Political capital comes in a variety of forms, after all.”

Watching the first years walk away only strengthened Charlotte’s resolve, and with newfound confidence, she led her friends into the open-air gazebo, where they found Dr. Vosima reading a paperback book. “Hi, Dr. Vosima,” Charlotte said, suddenly unsure of how to start.

Thankfully, Isaac saved her by asking, “Dr. Vosima, is it not rather cold to be reading outside?”

Their professor set his book down before gesturing for them to join him on the inner circle of benches.
